March 19, 2020 // Superintendent's Update
Dear SPS Families,
It has been a busy time for the schools as we strive to respond thoughtfully to the ever-evolving CONVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this communication is to share updates and resources. As a district, we have been prioritizing health and safety supports while also planning for an uncertain future.
Buildings and Grounds
All SPS buildings are closed to the public. The custodial staff is doing a thorough job of cleaning and sanitizing. Most SPS staff are working remotely to minimize social contact and preserve the integrity of the custodians’ work. Beginning today, March 19th, all playgrounds will also be closed as there is no way to ensure that surfaces of the play structures are virus-free.
Online Learning Resources
Continuing to learn, create, think and practice is of vital importance to students for both academic readiness and for social-emotional health. Following the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE) guidance, SPS is “keeping learning alive” by sharing optional extension activities for students. Extension activities are intended to keep students connected to the school community and encourage a learning mindset through enrichment, review, and inquiry. Elementary students can access extension activities through sudburystudents.org. Extension activities for middle school students will be shared through Schoology. Additionally, SPS educators and administrators will be regularly connecting with families using a variety of online platforms. District updates and resources can also be accessed through the district’s website: www.sudbury.k12.ma.us.
Nutrition
Whitson’s School Nutrition is offering essential services for students to have access to breakfast and lunch during school closure. Based on family feedback, some adjustments to the schedule have been made. Please indicate choices by 7 a.m. on Mondays. Pick up Monday-Wednesday breakfast meals on Mondays. Pick up Wednesday lunch-Friday lunch meals on Wednesdays. The pick-up window is from 11 a.m-12 noon on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Curtis Middle School loading dock behind the building. Please fill out one form per child. Regular meal pricing applies.
Loaner Devices
SPS is pushing out learning resources to families using online platforms. Families who do not have access to any device at home may fill out the form linked below. Please know that we have a limited number of loaners and may not be able to accommodate all requests. Families will be contacted directly by a member of the technology department regarding availability and pick-up.
School Calendar
The updated SPS 2019-2020 school calendar is available and an annotated calendar has been posted. The annotated calendar provides a visual of the days that will be made-up at the end of the year and the last day of school.
School Committee
The SPS School Committee will meet virtually on Monday, March 23rd. The agenda and access information will be forthcoming.
The district will continue to work closely with local and state officials to ensure that we are doing everything we can to keep families and staff safe and to meet the needs of our students. Please join us in observing social distancing and personal hygiene measures. If you have specific questions, concerns, or needs please do not hesitate to contact your building principal or guidance counselor using the email convention firstname_lastname@sudbury.k12.ma.us.
Sincerely,
Brad Crozier,
Superintendent
