This communication includes information about remote snow days and the flu vaccination requirement as well as an invitation to complete our second family feedback survey.
Remote Snow Days
New this year, DESE permits districts to call a fully remote snow day instead of canceling school and making up the day in June. Our local forecast looks like we may be receiving a big storm on Wednesday night, so we wanted to communicate in advance. As much as feasible, I will make an early decision on announcing the day, factoring in the type and trajectory of the storm. Snow day cancelations may still be called for large snow events and power outages.
We recognize that there are many “what ifs” associated with a remote snow day, and we would like to test the model so that we are better able to evaluate the efficacy of learning from home when the weather precludes in-person attendance. The overarching goal is to provide students with meaningful learning that mirrors as closely as possible their “normal” school day.
If a remote snow day is called, teachers and students will follow their typical schedule. Cohort A and Cohort B will remain separate with the teacher following the regular A/B schedule and working with students assigned to in-person learning for that day. At the elementary level, three touchpoints will remain as a tool to connect both cohorts of learners and take attendance. At the middle school level, homeroom and TEAM time will be used to support students and take attendance. Remote-day students will follow their typical remote schedule, including specialists or unified arts and support services. The schedule for fully remote students will remain the same. Teachers will provide more specific details in the event of a remote snow-day and the day will contain both synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities.
Flu Vaccination Requirement
This is a reminder that the Massachusetts Flu Vaccination Requirement requires that all students provide documentation that they have been vaccinated by December 31, 2020. Students who have not provided this documentation will not be able to enter any school building. Students who are fully remote are also subject to this requirement.
Family Feedback Survey
Please follow the link to the second family survey, which will close on December 23rd. We will use the information collected and the data from our first survey to measure the effectiveness of each of the learning models.
