September 6, 2019 // SPS Update Regarding EEE
Dear SPS Families,
It is likely that by now you have received a reverse 911 call confirming a Sudbury resident has contracted the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus. The town has also issued a press release after the Department of Public Health upgraded Sudbury’s risk level to “Critical.”
Out of an abundance of caution, SPS and our partners are taking the following measures, effective immediately:
- Spraying of the playgrounds and school property on Monday or Tuesday, weather permitting;
- Concluding all after school activities before dusk;
- Moving recess indoors for Pre-K to grade 5 students;
- Postponing or adjusting outdoor curricular activities.
Additionally, families are encouraged to provide their Curtis students with non-aerosol insect repellent which students will be given an opportunity to apply before outdoor recess and sports activities.
The two products being sprayed are Mavrik Perimeter, which will be applied via backpack sprayers at schools and fields. Anvil 10+10 will also be applied using a truck-mounted sprayer along town roadways. To read the safety data sheet for Mavrik Perimeter or Anvil 10+10, visit the town’s Department of Health website.
These measures will remain in place until further notice. SPS will continue to coordinate with Town and State officials, LSRHS, and other community partners and will provide updates as they become available.
Building administrators will be working with staff to make necessary adjustments and identify ways to mitigate potential impacts on students. If you have particular concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to reach out to your building administrator or school counselor.
Regards,
Brad Crozier
Superintendent of Schools
