School Committee Negotiations FAQs

Questions & Answers

Are the teachers working without a contract?

Our teachers are working under the contract that was signed by the SPS School Committee and the Sudbury Education Association in February 2022.  This contract is valid until the new contracts are signed. This means that our teachers are not working without a contract.  They are getting paid according to their regular schedule and receiving the  benefits from their signed contract.

Where are we in the process?

We have had multiple meetings and are making progress towards an agreement.  We are working to provide Sudbury educators with best contract we can afford within our budget from the town.

Who attends the negotiations meetings?

  • Bargaining/legal representatives for SPS School Committee and Sudbury Education Association (SEA)
  • The SPS School Committee Negotiations Subcommittee: Karyn Jones and Jessica McCready (chair of subcommittee)
  • Sudbury Education Association team led by President Melissa Morabito
  • Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) Representatives
  • Members of the SEA Bargaining Units A, B and C who wish to attend but not participate in discussions

What is the general format of the meetings?

  • The meetings are typically held at the Curtis Middle School on mutually agreed upon dates.
  • Meetings begin with an opening statement from the chair of the SPS School Committee followed by a statement from a Sudbury Education Association representative.
  • One of the parties presents information about their negotiations offer and questions are asked by the other party.
