Dear SPS Families:

As a school district, we are committed to creating and maintaining a comprehensive, coordinated effort to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and entire community. Our district already has several security measures in place, including locked entrances, an employee badging system, camera systems, and strong partnerships with Sudbury emergency responders. I am pleased to announce that we will soon be adding another layer of protection by launching the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (ARS).

This program includes age-appropriate educational modules for students in grades 4–8, teaching them how to recognize warning signs and threats—whether on social media, in school, or within the community—from individuals who may pose a danger to themselves or others. Our students are often the first to notice when their peers are facing challenges, so we believe it is crucial to empower them to recognize danger signs and provide them with tools to seek help. From October 28 - November 15, 2024, students in grades 4 - 8 will be learning about these important topics. More details about the specific dates for your child’s grade level training will be shared by the building principals.

During the instruction, educators will teach students to:

  • Recognize the signs and threats of at-risk behaviors

  • Take every sign seriously

  • Act quickly by speaking to a trusted adult or reporting the concern to the Say Something ARS Crisis Center via the mobile app, website, or hotline

In addition to training our students, school staff have been trained to recognize warning signs and threatening behaviors and how to report concerns to the appropriate individuals. The Sudbury Public Schools have a Threat Assessment Protocol that aligns with current best practices for school safety, developed in collaboration with our local safety officials. Additionally, designated individuals in the district have been trained to respond to and manage tips submitted through the Say Something reporting system.

The Say Something ARS program is provided by Sandy Hook Promise (SHP), a national non-profit organization. SHP’s programs are active in all 50 states, with over 21 million students and adults trained. They have a proven track record and extensive experience working effectively with children, parents, and educators to improve school safety and culture.

As your child’s trusted adult, you may elect to report using this system as well. We encourage everyone to contact a school administrator directly if they have concerns about an individual's or the school’s safety.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the building administrators or me.

Sincerely,
Annette Doyle
Assistant Superintendent
