My name is Margaret McGinty and I have the distinct honor and privilege of being the PreK-8 Mathematics Coordinator for the Town of Sudbury. I have recently completed my seventh year as a member of the 6th grade Math and Science team at Curtis Middle School. My time as a member of the Curtis teaching community has proven to me that Sudbury enjoys a rich history of academic and cultural excellence that is a direct result of the collegial partnership between staff and parents who provide a diversity of experiences for the students. I have been very fortunate to have been chosen to lead certain curriculum projects while at Curtis and I look forward to building on that experience when collaborating with staff, students and parents at the elementary schools within the district.
My teaching career began twelve years ago and through the completion of my graduate degree and the work I have done in two prior school systems I quickly identified that my ultimate desire was to direct and create curriculum programs. From my very first interview in Sudbury it was evident to me that the staff shared many of my core beliefs on math philosophy. I was lucky to be chosen for the teaching position at Curtis and lucky to have found and made a home for myself within the Sudbury School system.
As the PreK-8 Mathematics Coordinator for the Town of Sudbury I am committed to provide leadership that will inspire students and teachers alike. The educational math program will continue to provide differentiated instruction, be academically challenging while engaging students through traditional means of instruction while also implementing current technologies in their day to day classrooms.
My math philosophy is engaging and innovative. I recognize the importance of foundational skills such as math facts, but also believe in sharing multiple instructional strategies so that students can choose the one that allows them to see the most success. I believe that our math curriculum should be presented in a way that is linked to previous knowledge and is also exciting to promote further exploration of new ideas.
